Take time for yourself with simple slow stitching.
Slow Stitching is a practice of simple rhythmic hand stitching using needle and thread to create textile pieces, it is a calming mindful activity, helping us to unwind and be present; it allows the busy mind to rest through the act of sewing and can aid good mental health and self-care.
Stories, memories, and our personal connection to cloth have provided a narrative for many cultures over the centuries. Friends, family, and neighbors would gather to listen and tell stories together whilst they worked on quilting cloth or mending and patching clothes. Through stitching, listening and storytelling in a unique safe environment, we too can explore and celebrate the shared experiences that bring us together as a community today.
I am an active follower of the slow stitch movement, I practice daily stitch journaling, and share this as a mindful activity with individuals and communities I work alongside. As part of SWLSTG’s peer support project working with a group of carers we are currently creating a piece of textile art ‘Threads of Awareness’ which will be exhibited at Springfields Summer Street Party in July.
